Mizzou baseball topples Truman State, 14-4

By Zach Garcia

The Missouri baseball team made the best of its final game prior to beginning its Southeastern Conference schedule this weekend, taking down Truman State (2-12) by a score of 14-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Missouri (5-7) improvised in scheduling Truman State for Wednesday’s game. Coach Tim Jamieson received a call on Monday from Truman State coach Dan Davis, asking Jamieson if Truman State could use Taylor Stadium for a neutral site game he was trying to schedule this week. Jamieson told Davis to bring his team down to play Missouri instead.

Missouri overmatched Truman State on both sides of the field, scoring 14 runs on 13 hits, while the Tigers’ pitching staff combined for four runs on eight hits and only one walk.

Missouri freshman Griffin Goodrich earned the win in his first college start, pitching four innings of shutout baseball and striking out five batters. Meanwhile, Scott Sommerfeld and Josh Lester both led the Tigers at the plate, as each batted three runs in.

Jamieson’s squad will now begin its final preparations for the No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks (13-2), who will be in town this weekend for Missouri’s inaugural Southeastern Conference series. The opener will come Friday night at 6 p.m., with pregame fireworks planned at Taylor Stadium.
