No. 14 174-pound wrestler Todd Porter celebrates after upsetting the No. 1 wrestler in the country. Porter dominated Oklahoma State’s Chris Perry 9-1. The win marked a bright finish on the Tigers 21-13 loss to the Cowboys.
You couldn’t tell the Missouri wrestling team lost Friday to No. 2 Oklahoma State judging by the smile on Todd Porter’s face.
The 14th-ranked Missouri 174-pound wrestler left the mat Friday night into the arms of his teammates after beating the top-ranked Chris Perry. Porter controlled the match, winning by major decision 9-1 in the final bout of No. 5 Missouri’s 21-13 loss to the Cowboys.
The Tigers fell to 10-2 in duals on the season, losing in front of a record 6,486 fans at Missouri’s annual Beauty and the Beast, a wrestling dual alongside a gymnastics meet.
The Tigers did not wrestle top-ranked heavyweight Dom Bradley. Instead, Missouri opted for Devon Mellon, an NCAA tournament qualifier for the Tigers last season. The Cowboys’ third-ranked Alan Gelogaev pinned Mellon in the second period, increasing Oklahoma State’s lead to 12-0.
Missouri took four of the 10 bouts including wins at 125 pounds, 133 pounds and 141 pounds.
Second-ranked 125-pound wrestler Alan Waters won 4-3 over Oklahoma State’s Eddie Klimara. Waters remains undefeated on the season at 19-0. Sixth-ranked 133-pound wrestler Nathan McCormick won 4-3 over third-ranked Jon Morrison.
Missouri started Nicholas Hucke instead of Trevor Jaunch at 141 pounds. Hucke won 5-4 over Oklahoma State’s Julian Feikert.
