After splitting the first two games with Texas, Mizzou softball was looking to win the three-game series in Austin. No. 11 Mizzou beat No. 3 Texas 2-0, giving the Tigers a 10-3 record in the Big 12 Conference.
The Tigers’ first run came in the second inning off a single by Kelsea Roth to score Corrin Genovese, who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Texas threatened with runners on second and third with one out, but Mizzou pitcher Chelsea Thomas was able to get out of the jam with two strikeouts.
With two outs in the third inning, Ashley Fleming hit her ninth home run of the season. Fleming led Mizzou’s offense with eight RBIs in the series. Freshman Ashton Stephens contributed six hits in the series.
Thomas, who pitched all three games of the series, allowed five hits with nine strikeouts. All five hits came in the first three innings, as Thomas reached her groove in the fourth. Thomas is now 16-4 this season.
Texas and Mizzou are now tied for second place in the Big 12 Conference behind Texas A&M. The Tigers get a few days off until they play Northern Iowa on Wednesday, April 11 at 4 p.m.
