The No. 13 Missouri softball team now sits with a 10-3 record after dominating the 2012 Missouri Coaches v. Cancer Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., adding four wins. The Tigers opened Saturday with two run-rule victories against St. Louis University by 10-0 and Southeastern Missouri State by 9-0. Missouri State and the University of Missouri-Kansas City also fell to Missouri on Sunday by 3-1 and 6-0 scores.
The Tigers shut out three opponents and allowed only one run in the four game series. Redshirt junior Chelsea Thomas pitched her third career perfect game, against SLU on Saturday and senior Kristin Nottelmann recorded her first shutout of the season. Freshman Baily Erwin was on the road to a shutout before giving up a run in the seventh inning against Missouri State.
Missouri’s defense backed its starting pitchers, committing only two errors in the tournament. Prior to this weekend, the Tigers committed a team-high four errors in their loss against No. 22 Nebraska.
There was an even distribution of RBIs and runs scored across the roster. In the first game of the tournament against SLU, the big names were senior Ashley Fleming and junior Nicole Hudson combining for six of the 10 RBIs. In the next game against Missouri State, freshman Kelsea Roth and junior Lindsey Muller drove in almost half of the nine Missouri runs, with two RBIs apiece. Junior Jenna Marston is settling into her new lead-off role strongly by scoring seven of the team’s 28 runs for the series.
Next weekend, Missouri will host the DeMarini Invitational beginning March 9 against Alcorn State. Boise State and Northern Illinois are the other two teams in the invitational. Missouri is favored in this series as the only ranked team.
