Attitude matters: Wrestler Alan Waters’ aggressive approach to his sophomore season

After Big 12 wins, ten Tigers advance to NCAA tournament

By Kelsey Alumbaugh

Alan Waters works to gain an advantage in his championship match against Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma.

Alan Waters is one step closer to his goal.

Waters wrestles in the 125-pound weight class for Missouri and on Saturday he won his weight class in the Big 12 conference tournament, one of four championships won by the Tigers. Waters now advances to the NCAA national championships, the goal he was been working for all year. Waters beat Oklahoma’s Jarrod Patterson 7-0 for the championship.

Drake Houdashelt, Zach Toal and Mike Larson also won their weight classes. Nathan McCormick, Kyle Bradley, Dorian Henderson and Brent Haynes finished in second place and Nicholas Hucke placed third in his class. Missouri’s victory came with the help of an Iowa State win in the heavyweight championship. OSU was only four points behind MU at the end of the tournament and a heavyweight win would have been enough to put OSU on top.

The Big 12 wrestling tournament was hosted at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo. Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri competed for the title. Missouri, ranked No. 10 nationally, sends Waters and eight other Tigers to the NCAA tournament, Mar 15-17 in St. Louis.

Ranked No. 3, Waters is taking a more aggressive approach against his opponents. His new approach has landed him two Big 12 wrestler of the week awards so far this season, but Waters main goal is to go after a national title.
