After Blaine Gabbert declared for the NFL Draft Monday, defensive end Aldon Smith followed suit by entering the draft, foregoing his junior and senior seasons at Mizzou.
As a redshirt sophomore, Smith collected 5.5 sacks and 48 tackles in 10 games. The year was disappointing considering Smith’s 11.5-sack performance in 2009—which set Mizzou’s all-time single season sack record—but a broken leg limited Smith early in the year.
“There’s no question that Aldon is one of the most gifted athletes in the country at his position,” coach Gary Pinkel said. “We’d love to have the chance to coach him longer, but we’re 100 percent behind him and supportive with this decision.
“Aldon gave us three outstanding years, and it’s going to be exciting to watch him in the pros, because his best football is ahead of him.”
